I don't know what to make of Maria Takagi. She's a startling beautiful woman and one of Japan's top professional video idols, and I find myself wondering why a woman of her obvious talents is doing what she's doing for a living. You see, Maria Takagi, an elegant woman who reminds one of Audry Hepburn, is a stylish and elegant adult idol who actually act. I mean, really act, well enough to make you forget you're watching an adult video at all.
In Maboroshi ("Illusion"), Maria plays a ghostly former girlfriend of a man trying to get away from his past. He turns, and she's at his side again, the long-dead former lover who has returned to him in his waking dream. The wonder of Maria-chan is that, with her every movement and gesture, you feel that she loves this man, and wants to be with him. Their sex, played out through four different scenes, shares this quality -- she's not fucking an adult actor, but is opening herself to accept the man she really loves. It's eerie, really, but her unique talent is fresh and welcome in Japan's often cookie-cutter-ized adult video world.
